Introduction: Li Chunyan (Sep.15, 1938-) is a neurologist from Dacheng County, Langfang, Hebei. He graduated from Hebei Medical College in 1962 and received his bachelor's degree. Li is currently the director of the Hebei Key Laboratory of Neurology and the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Clinical Neurology. He studied the neuroelectrophysiology of more than 300 patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and autopsy data of 25 cases, and found that GBS not only had acute inflammatory demyelinating lesions, but also had pathological changes characterized by acute primary motor axonal degeneration, a new subtype of GBS named acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN). He took more than 700 specimens and cultivated Campylobacter jejuni from the patient's feces by more than a thousand times cultivation, and used the bacteria and lipopolysaccharide from the bacteria to induce the animal model of AMAN. These researches won the first prize of Hebei Science and Technology Progress Award in 1994 and 2004, and the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1996. In the past ten years, he led the research group to study the pathogenesis and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Li has published more than 130 relevant papers in domestic and foreign professional journals. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2001.
