From August 23 to 27, 2025, the "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Resource and Environment Scientific Data Sharing and Disaster Incident Response Service International Training Course" was successfully held at the China Joint Earth Science Research Center (CPJRC) in Pakistan. This training was jointly organized by the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources of China Academy of Sciences, Central South University and Jinnah University of Pakistan. The national key research and development project "Development and Application Demonstration of Satellite Emergency Technology System for Typical Major Natural Disasters"(2023YFE0208000) and the Knowledge Service System for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of UNESCO International Engineering Science and Technology Knowledge Center (IKCEST-DRR) provided teaching teams and technical support.
This training course is the second time that it is held at Jinnah University in Pakistan after the first training in 2019 by researcher Wang Juanle of the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources, China Academy of Sciences. The training attracted students from seven countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Yemen to sign up. The training class is conducted in a combination of online and offline methods, improving course coverage and participation breadth. More than 50 students from Queid-i-Azam University, University of Punjab, University of Peshawar, Karakoram International University, Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other units participated in the training on site, and more than 60 students participated online. Among them, an online branch venue was set up at the University of Punjab.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center for Earth Sciences. Professor Mumtaz Shah, Director of the Department of Earth Sciences at Jinnah University, Professor Wu Lixin of Central South University, and Researcher Wang Juanle, Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources, China Academy of Sciences, delivered speeches respectively, generally reviewing and introducing the resource and environmental data sharing and disaster prevention and reduction knowledge service training of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The background and purpose of training, and how to better promote the application of data sharing platforms, information processing and knowledge service systems in the region in the context of current technological development.
A total of 12 special reports and 1 questionnaire were arranged for this training, covering earth science data sharing, disaster prevention and reduction knowledge services, remote sensing emergency monitoring, disaster risk assessment and international cooperation. Researcher Wang Juanle of the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Resources gave a report on "Big Data Driven Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service", associate researcher Yang Fei gave a report on "Urban Heat Stress: Progress, Challenges and Insights", and assistant researcher Li Congliang gave a report on "Disaster Chain Modeling in Earthquake-Prone Mountainous Areas".
During the training, the trainees also participated in the "China-Pakistan Symposium ON Early Warning Systems FOR Hydrological and Geological Disasters" held at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of Pakistan. At the meeting, Researcher Wang Juanle delivered a keynote report entitled "Digital Platform Empowering China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Disaster Management", introducing the supporting role of digital platforms in disaster management in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
This training aims to improve disaster prevention and control capabilities and sustainable development levels in areas along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, promote the sharing of disaster scientific data, strengthen in-depth cooperation between China and Pakistan in the field of disaster risk management, and provide a basis for building a multi-party participation, open sharing. The disaster governance cooperation mechanism provides strong support.
