Qiu Guixing (Mar.13, 1942-) is an expert in orthopedics from Wuxi, Jiangsu province. He graduated from Peking Union Medical College in 1968 (eight-year program). He is the professor at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, doctoral tutor and expert who receives special government subsidy. He is the deputy director and standing committee of Medical and Health Department of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, chairman of the Bethune Charitable Foundation, vice president of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) and president of the Chinese Department, president of International Chinese Spine Society (ICSS), vice chairman of Council of Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award; He is also the vice-chairman of Committee of Exports on Rational Drug Use of National Health and Family Planning Commission of the P.R. China, chairman of Committee of Medical Consumables Equipment of China Association of Medical Equipment, executive director of Beijing Medical Doctors Association, chairman of Committee of orthopedic specialists, editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Joint Surgery (Electronic Edition), vice-chairman and deputy editor-in-chief of Medical Reference and honorary academician of The Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, etc. He has been engaged in clinic diagnosis and treatment, scientific research and teaching in the field of orthopedics for a long time, and has made important contributions to the development of spinal deformity. He put forward international classification of idiopathic scoliosis - “Union Classification”, and published it in Spine, an authoritative journal of spinal surgery. In addition, Dr. Qiu found the most important virulence gene of congenital scoliosis for the first time in the world, and in 2015, it, as original article, was published on The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) (impact factor=54. 42) which is considered as the world's top medical journal. He also developed the spinal internal fixation system with independent intellectual property rights. He won two the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, obtained nine authorized patents (2 inventions), published more than 600 treatises and edited 38 monographs such as Operative Orthopaedics. In 2007, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
