Professor Kang Shaozhong is the director and chief professor of Center for Agricultural Water Research in China, China Agricultural University. He is the vice president of China Association of Water-saving in Agriculture and Rural Water Supply, vice chairman of China Association of Agricultural Engineering, Chairman of Chinese Agricultural Soil and Water Engineering Society and Vice-Chairman of Chinese Committee of Irrigation and Drainage.
Prof. Kang’s research interests are mainly on the principle and practice of water-saving agriculture and water management in arid and semiarid areas. He has developed theories and practices of deficit irrigation to improve crop water use efficiency, obtained crop coefficients and drew the contour map of water requirement for different crops in Northwest China, presented methods for efficient irrigation, and established the optimal regional water management model in Northwest China, which have been applied broadly in Northwest China.
He received ICID Water-saving Technology Award for outstanding contribution to water-saving and water conservation in agriculture from International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in 2006, and he also obtained the National Science and Technology Progress Award by State Council of China in 2006, 2010 and 2013, the Science and Technology Progress Award by Chinese Ministry of Education in 1998,2003and 2012, the Award of Natural Science by Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001, Outstanding Contribution Award for Development of Western China by China Association of Science and Technology in 2003. He also obtained State Award for Youth and Middle-age Scientist with Distinguished Contributions in 1998, Excellent Teacher Award by State Council of China in 1998, Chinese Excellent Youth Scientist Award by Chinese Society of Science and Technology, and Ministry of Personnel of China in 1994. In 2010, he was awarded the honorary doctoral degree of science by Lancaster University, UK. In 2011, he was elected as the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
