The state of framework development for implementing reasoning mechanisms in smart cyber-physical systems: A literature review

Keywords:Cyber-physical systems;System smartness;Development framework;System level reasoning;Compositionality
Abstracts:Smart CPSs (S-CPSs) have been evolving beyond what was identified by the traditional definitions of CPSs. The objective of our research is to investigate the concepts and implementations of reasoning processes for S-CPSs, and more specifically, the frameworks proposed for the fuzzy front end of their reasoning mechanisms. The objectives of the paper are: (i) to analyze the framework concepts and implementations of CPS, (ii) to review the literature concerning system-level reasoning and its enablers from the points of view of the processed knowledge, building awareness, reasoning mechanisms, decision making, and adaptation. Our findings are: (i) awareness and adaptation behaviors are considered as system-level smartness of S-CPSs that are not achieved by traditional design approaches; (ii) model-based and composability approaches insufficiently support the development of reasoning mechanisms for S-CPSs; (iii) frameworks for development of reasoning in S-CPS should support compositional design. Based on the conclusions above, we argue that coping with the challenges of compositionality requires both software-level integration and holistic fusion of knowledge by means of semantic transformations. This entails the need for a multi aspect framework that is able to capture at least conceptual, functional, architectural, informational, interoperation, and behavioral aspects. It needs further investigation if a compositionality enabling framework should appear in the form of a meta-framework (abstract) or in the form of a semantically integrated (concrete) framework.

Abstracts:Tangible computer-aided design (CAD) that can generate and manipulate 3D models more efficiently than conventional modeling interfaces is a new interface technology between users and computers through tangible physical devices. Because the majority of tangible CAD systems use cameras or projectors, 3D models of complex structures with visual occlusion cannot be generated. In this work, we propose and develop a system that allows users to create complex shapes by assembling wireless blocks. By allowing more freedom in the orientations of blocks, models created by the assembly operation can be used to generate true 3D shapes compared to the 2.5D shapes resulting from previous research. The physical blocks of the proposed system include infrared proximity sensors, inertial magnetic units, Zigbee modules, and Arduino microcontrollers. The status of the block assembly is transmitted to the workstation wirelessly by the Zigbee. The workstation collects the sensor data of the blocks and generates and renders 3D models of the physically assembled blocks. The concept of the proposed tangible CAD system can be used in various application areas where simple, easy-to-use shape modeling interfaces for creating models by assembling small blocks are sufficient. The education and gaming industries are good examples of where this concept can be applied easily.

Abstracts:The problem of exponential heat source across a flowing nanofluid (TiO2-EO; titanium oxide-Engine oil) containing tiny dust particles on a deformable planar plate has been an open question in meteorology. In this paper, the boundary layer transient two-phase flow of dusty nanoliquid on an isothermal plate which is deforming with time-dependent velocity in the presence of exponential heat source is studied. The impacts of Hall current, nonlinear radiative heat and an irregular heat source (temperature based heat source and exponential space-based heat source) are also accounted. Dusty nanofluid is the composition of dust particles and nanoliquid (TiO2-EO). Using relevant transformations, the system of PDEs is rehabilitated to the system of ODEs and then treated numerically. Exploration of the impacts of pertinent parameters on velocity and temperature fields is performed via graphical illustrations. Numeric data for skin friction factor and the Nusselt number is presented and their characteristics are analyzed/quantified through the slope of linear regression via data points.

Abstracts:Swarm Intelligence is a metaheuristic optimization approach that has become very predominant over the last few decades. These algorithms are inspired by animals’ physical behaviors and their evolutionary perceptions. The simplicity of these algorithms allows researchers to simulate different natural phenomena to solve various real-world problems. This paper suggests a novel algorithm called Donkey and Smuggler Optimization Algorithm (DSO). The DSO is inspired by the searching behavior of donkeys. The algorithm imitates transportation behavior such as searching and selecting routes for movement by donkeys in the actual world. Two modes are established for implementing the search behavior and route-selection in this algorithm. These are the Smuggler and Donkeys. In the Smuggler mode, all the possible paths are discovered and the shortest path is then found. In the Donkeys mode, several donkey behaviors are utilized such as Run, Face & Suicide, and Face & Support. Real world data and applications are used to test the algorithm. The experimental results consisted of two parts, firstly, we used the standard benchmark test functions to evaluate the performance of the algorithm in respect to the most popular and the state of the art algorithms. Secondly, the DSO is adapted and implemented on three real-world applications namely; traveling salesman problem, packet routing, and ambulance routing. The experimental results of DSO on these real-world problems are very promising. The results exhibit that the suggested DSO is appropriate to tackle other unfamiliar search spaces and complex problems.
Tracing sub-surface swept profiles of tapered toroidal end mills between level cuts

Abstracts:Development of closed-form solutions and algorithms for constructing sub-surface swept profiles (SWP) of toroidal and conical bodies is presented in this paper. While the problem of identifying the entire SWP of such surfaces has been extensively investigated in extant studies, construction of subsurface SWPs has rarely been addressed despite the subject being of great significance to machining process employing nonstandard-shaped NC tools. Torus shapes considered in extant literature are restricted to the fourth quadrant of a tube cross section. In industrial applications, however, profile cutters contain different regions of a toroidal surface. To identify SWP elements in the proposed study, a single analytical expression in one variable has been deduced using two moving frames. The basic idea behind such a formulation is to employ the one-to-many strategy, which greatly reduces the computational cost and effort. Algorithms to identify feasible domains of SWP parameters at each level cut, where toroidal and conical surfaces meet, have also been proposed in this study. This is important, since cutting a tool surfaces along the rotation axis divides SWP-parameter domains into non overlapping sets of intervals that must be addressed for each tool posture. In addition, this study demonstrates that for certain tool postures, while C1 continuity between sub-surfaces is satisfied, the SWP connectivity is lost at some points. To locate these so called singular-characteristic points, some precomputation steps have been performed. Lastly, several factors affecting the smoothness of SWPs have been identified and discussed.
Geometric shape features extraction using a steady state partial differential equation system

Keywords:Partial differential equations;Geometric shape features;Shape analysis;Finite element method;Computer aided engineering
Abstracts:A unified method for extracting geometric shape features from binary image data using a steady-state partial differential equation (PDE) system as a boundary value problem is presented in this paper. The PDE and functions are formulated to extract the thickness, orientation, and skeleton simultaneously. The main advantage of the proposed method is that the orientation is defined without derivatives and thickness computation is not imposed a topological constraint on the target shape. A one-dimensional analytical solution is provided to validate the proposed method. In addition, two-dimensional numerical examples are presented to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method.

Keywords:Nanofluid;Casson fluid;Dufour effect;Regression analysis;Probable error
Abstracts:The statistical and exact analysis of the unsteady radiative flow of Nano and Casson fluids past a vertical plate with Dufour effect is carried out. The heat transport phenomenon is studied under uniform heat flux (UHF) and uniform wall temperature (UWT) conditions. The exact solution to the problem is found using the Laplace transform method (LTM). The effects of various parameters on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are examined via graphs. The heat transfer rate and skin friction are analyzed through statistical tools like probable error and regression. The Dufour effect enhances the velocity and temperature profiles. It is also observed that the velocity profile is slightly greater in the case of UWT than the UHF case for both nanofluid and Casson fluid. From the regression analysis, it is established that the Dufour number and nanoparticle volume fraction have a negative impact whereas the radiative heat parameter has a positive impact on the rate of heat transfer.

Keywords:Nanofluid;Heat generation or absorption;Viscous dissipation;Entropy generation;Magnetohydrodynamic
Abstracts:This paper presents a formulation for simulating magnetohydrodynamic three-dimensional convective flow and heat transfer in a nanofluid by incorporating the complete viscous dissipation function in the energy equation. A novel feature of this investigation of entropy generation and dual solutions is the use of the spectral quasilinearization method to solve the conservation equations. The results are compared with exact solutions or higher order solutions and a good agreement is achieved. The accuracy is determined by calculation of residual errors and the method of solution is shown to produce smaller residual errors than those achieved by the fifth-order Runge-Kutta Fehlberg method for nonlinear differential equations. The dual solutions for different Prandtl number, and Brownian motion and thermophoresis parameters are shown graphically and discussed. It is found that the temperature profiles as well as thermal boundary layer thickness increase with the Brownian motion parameter for first and the second solutions. The temperature profiles increase with the thermophoresis parameter for the first and second solutions. The entropy generation increases with the Reynolds number.

Abstracts:The paper broadly addresses how Industry 4.0 program drivers will impact maintenance in aviation. Specifically, Industry 4.0 practices most suitable to aeronautical maintenance are selected, and a detailed exposure is provided. Advantages and open issues are widely discussed and case studies dealing with realistic scenarios are illustrated to support what has been proposed by authors. The attention has been oriented towards Augmented Reality and Additive Manufacturing technologies, which can support maintenance tasks and spare parts production, respectively. The intention is to demonstrate that Augmented Reality and Additive Manufacturing are viable tools in aviation maintenance, and while a strong effort is necessary to develop an appropriate regulatory framework, mandatory before the wide-spread introduction of these technologies in the aerospace systems maintenance process, there has been a great interest and pull from the industry sector.
