Urinary amylase: Its estimation and significance

Daniel L. Dozzi
Abstract

A review of current views concerning the origin of urinary amylase, the nature of amylase, the different phenomena encounteredwith the different methods for measuring the enzyme, and the factors which govern amylase action has been presented. In anattempt to clarify this discussion, a reliable method for estimating urinary amylase was developed and studies were conductedunder various conditions in health and in disease. A group of normals was studied in order to obtain normal ranges for amylase excretion during 24 hours, and this same groupwas restudied to determine the effect on the excretion or formation of amylase by restricting and forcing fluids, varyingthe diet and changing the pH of the urine. Also the rate of amylase excretion during a 24-hour period, and the relation betweenthe concentration of urine (specific gravity), volume and amylase content were determined.
