Abstract

Summary 1. Toxemia of pregnancy continues to be one of the serious complications of human gestation and remains a common cause of maternal and perinatal mortality. 2. Some recent basic concepts of etiology, pathologic anatomy, pathologic physiology and diagnostic methods have been reviewed. 3. Medical management of mild and severe pre-eclampsia and of eclampsia is based on the correction of significant pathologic physiology present. 4. The indications and logic for obstetric management are outlined.
