An improved spherometer
A spherometer is described which is fitted with a device for indicating the point of contact. A plunger passes up the centre of the screw and, on contacting the surface to be measured, rises relatively to the screw. The upper part of the plunger carries a small glass disc which, when it rises, touches a convex glass surface fixed to the screw and so produces Newton's rings. The spherometer can be used for measuring finely ground or opaque surfaces.
