Robert Stewart Whipple
Mr. Whipple, now 80 years of age, has devoted his life to the history, development and manufacture of scientific instruments. The son of G. M. Whipple, Superintendent of Kew Observatory, he entered the observatory as an assistant in 1888, leaving eight years later to become assistant manager to L. P. Casella, the well-known instrument manufacturer. Two years later, Mr. Whipple became private assistant to Mr. (later Sir) Horace Darwin, who founded the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company, of which Mr. Whipple became Manager and Secretary at the end of 1898.
