Vanadium Yields to lon Exchange

Abstract

135 ACS NATIONAL MEETING Inorganic Chemistry Chemists from Dow Chemical's western division have found that they can recover vanadium along with uranium from phosphate rock by an ion exchange process. The Dow study began several years ago for the Atomic Energy Commission when there was still some question whether U. S. reserves of uranium were adequate. The study was aimed at getting uranium from low grade ores, such as western phosphate rock. David A. Ellis told a symposium on phosphorus chemistry, Division of Inorganic Chemistry, that he and R. H. Boiles, with a group of Dow chemists, discovered that vanadium could be adsorbed on an anion exchange resin along with uranium from 30% phosphoric acid (made from phosphate rock). The main requirements: The vanadium must be in the +V valence state to be adsorbed; there must be some fluoride present in the acid, Ellis points out. ? Rock Contains Vanadium. Western phosphate rock contains about ...
