COMMERCIAL shark fishing in Florida has developed to the extent that shark oil is now available in commercial quantities. Poultry growers in the southeastern part of the United States who have been using this oil at the ordinary levels of cod liver oil have reported better than average growth and egg production. Bio-assays of commercial shark liver oil in the Nutrition Division (Rusoff, 1938) have shown a potency of from 4,000 to over 15,000 U.S.P. XI units of vitamin A per gram. Other investigators have demonstrated that shark liver oils from different localities possess a high content of vitamin A. Hidesaburo (1920) reported that shark liver oil will maintain rats on a vitamin A-deficient diet. Poulsson and Weidemann (1925) stated that there was little difference in vitamin A potency of cod liver oil and shark liver oil.
