Development of a new micro punching machine with micro male and female dies fabricated online

Abstract

In this work, a new micro punching machine with micro male and female dies fabricated online was developed for punching special-shaped micro holes on high-strength elastic alloys. On this machine, fabrication of micro moulds by EDM process, moulds alignment and punching shot could be accomplished in sequence through one-time clamping. Micro square holes with side lengths of 400μm and L-shaped micro holes with complex geometry and long edge perimeter were punched out on 80μm thick 3J21, 100μm thick 304 steel and brass strips. Profiles of the holes, which were punched with a clearance of 10μm, are good without obvious crack and collapse. Even micro square parts that were stripped from strips are dimensionally accurate, having a dimension difference within 10μm from the fabricated male die. All the experiment results indicate that the developed machine can produce special-shaped micro moulds online and output high power for punching micro parts on high-strength alloy strips.
