The influence of saponins isolated from Herniaria glabra L. on Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) feeding.

Abstract

Previously tested saponins isolated from Medicago sativa, Saponaria officinalis and Convallaria maialis showed significant biological activity against Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata). The range of investigation on this subject was widen this year by including saponins extracted from H. glabra. Choice tests were performed to observe food choice between the control leaves and leaves treated with saponins from this plant. Both larvae and beetles of Colorado potato beetle were used in all the experiments. The insects willingly chose the untreated leaves compared to the treated leaves. A higher number of beetles compared to larvae avoided feeding on treated leaves. There were also differences between the consumed area of the tested leaf discs: it was bigger for the control leaves regardless of larvae and beetles. The results confirmed our previous observation concerning saponins isolated from other plants..
