Abstract

As predicted, blight struck the UK crop hard this summer. Rob Clayton of the British Potato Council has confirmed that the Fight Against Blight reporting service had logged more than 320 incidences of the disease by the end of August. This was well inexcess of the figures for any of the previous four seasons. This year, reported instances of blight are the highest we have seen and this has also been the case for Smith periods and near misses in the BlightWatch service, says Rob Clayton. He claims the integrated Fight Against Blight and BlightWatch systems, operating under the BPC banner and with additional sponsorship this season from POTATO REVIEW, came into their own in helping growers and advisors assess risk.
