Abstract

SHARK liver oil is one of the by-products of the shark fishing industry of Florida. This oil is valued for its high vitamin A content. Rusoff and Mehrhof (1939) found approximately 9,000 I.U. of vitamin A per gram of shark liver oil (poultry grade) as compared with U.S.P. XI reference cod liver oil (3,000 units of vitamin A per gram) when assayed with growing Single Comb White Leghorn chicks. Some investigators have reported the vitamin D content of shark liver oil. Asenjo, Cook, and Axtmayer (1937) in Puerto Rico found 50 I.U. of vitamin D per gram of blue shark (Carcharias milberti Valenciennis) liver oil, while Cunningham (1937) reported that New Zealand shark liver oil contained 13 I.U of vitamin D per gram. This paper reports the vitamin D content of Florida shark liver oil (poultry grade), using chicks as experimental animals. EXPERIMENTAL The A.O.A.C. method for vitamin D assay . . .
