Windows 10 May 2019 Update: The Best New Features

About every six months, Microsoft starts rolling out what it calls a "Feature Update" to its popular desktop operating system. The Windows 10 May 2019 Update (known to beta testers as 19H1—meaning 2019, first half of the year) has started rolling out to users. If your PC hasn't received the update yet, read our story on how to download it.

The update is surprisingly devoid of earth-shattering, eyebrow-raising new features. Instead, it adds refinements and new options to existing features. You may also notice that some features have been removed with this update. For info on that, read 6 Things Microsoft Is Killing With the Windows 10 May 2019 Update. For a quick rundown of new additions for the release, click or scroll through the slides here. There are plenty of other updates, of course, and feel free to chime in below in our comments section about those you feel are crucial.

  • Light Mode

Dark mode has gotten all the headlines of late, but with the May 2019 Update, Microsoft gave some love to Light mode. The new default wallpaper looks good with both. A completely new choice is Custom, which lets you set light or dark separately for Windows components and apps.
  • Pause Updates

No company has taken more flack about the delivery of updates as Microsoft. This update includes a lot of work on the update options themselves. You can pause Feature updates for a whole year, Quality (security and reliability) updates for up to a month, and you can specify exactly when you want the update to take place. Honestly, my PC's update to May 2019 took about 15 minutes. I just don't get the outcry and the stance that an OS that lets you keep running an old version that may include security vulnerabilities, and lacks the latest and greatest features, is preferable.
  • A Separate Cortana

With the May 2019 Update, Cortana gets separated from the Windows Search feature. Now, when you tap her circular icon, the AI assistant starts listening right away to do your bidding. If you really hate Cortana, you can make her disappear from your PC entirely. Personally, I find the feature of great use when I don't feel like typing to look something up or open another app. I appreciate the ability to shut down the PC at the end of the day by voice, too.
  • Better Screenshot Tool

You can now use Windows Key-S to shoot a window, a free rectangle, or the full screen. With the update, you can now add an outline, with adjustable color and thickness, to you captures. I still miss the ability to crop to set aspect ratios like square or 16-by-9 widescreen.
  • Kaimoji and Symbols

Now when you hit Windows Key-Period(.) you get more than just smilies. Tabs for Kaimoji (emoji built from standard text characters) and symbols, such as Greek letters. It's a great convenience.
  • Back Up Important Folders With OneDrive

A new OneDrive option lets you designate your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures for cloud backup and syncing. Of course, you could just save those to a OneDrive subfolder in the first place, but this gives you extra protection for when you use the local default user folders.
  • Sandbox for Pros

This one is only available to users of the Pro and Enterprise editions of Windows 10. It lets you install a dubious program in an isolated virtual copy of Windows within Windows to evaluate its security.
  • Brightness Slider

Before this update, you had to click through options that included Brighter, Brightest, Darker, Suggested, and so on. Now, we finally get a simple slider in the Action Center sidebar to easily adjust the screen.
