6 Games You'll Want to Buy in May

So begins the summer video game lull, where the flood of triple-A game releases slows to a mere stream, as publishers hold off for bigger holiday debuts. That's not to say you can't find gems; there are still lots of excellent games worth nabbing, if you know where to look.

April saw the release of Cuphead on the Switch, which brought the quirky noodle-armed cartoon run-and-gun to Nintendo fans on the go. Mortal Kombat 11 also arrived late last month, giving fighting game fans some chunky one-on-one combat and brutal violence in which to revel. April was also a good month for adventure and RPGs. But May is no slouch.

Technically, our list includes eight games: Capcom is releasing three classic Resident Evil games on the Nintendo Switch—Resident Evil HD, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil 0—but we lumped them together below. If fisticuffs and quirky Japanese humor are more your speed, Yakuza Kiwami 2 hits PCs this month, so you can pummel gangster thugs and help oddball citizens to your heart's content. Check out the full list below.

  • Yakuza Kiwami 2

    Platforms: PC
    Release Date: May 9
    MSRP: $29.99

Kiwami 2 is a remake of the PS2 action-adventure Yakuza 2, and follows the misadventures of Kazuma Kiryu, the nicest gangster in all of Japan. Kiryu has abandoned his Yakuza clan, but is called back into the world of crime when the clan's chairman is murdered. You explore the open-world city of Kamurocho, as well as Tokyo, Osaka, and the like, taking on story missions and side quests, all while brawling with any thugs who try to jump you in the streets.

  • Rage 2

    Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
    Release Date: May 14
    MSRP: $59.99

Embrace your road rage once again with Avalanche and Id Studios' post-apocalyptic first-person shooter, Rage 2. An asteroid has devastated mankind, splintering the few surviving peoples into vulnerable settlements spread thin across a vast wasteland. You are the last ranger, and must survive in the harsh world while fending off vicious mutants and a power-hungry dictatorship, while hunting for valuable lost technology from the pre-impacted world.

  • Team Sonic Racing

Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One
    Release Date: May 21
    MSRP: $39.99

This Sonic-themed kart racer takes the spikey cast of anthropomorphic animals and gives them some spiffy wheels on which to speed. Characters are broken down into speed, technical, and power classes, each of which has unique perks. You can also drive over power ups to give yourself temporary buffs or offensive attacks against opponents. Unlike other kart racers, Team Sonic Racing is cooperative by nature, so you win by working together with teammates and earning points.

  • Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 0

    Platforms: Nintendo Switch
    Release Date: May 21
    MSRP: $29.99

Capcom is releasing several Resident Evil classics this month. Resident Evil, also known by fans as the REmake, is a high-definition remake of the original PS1 survival horror game, filled with dark corridors, flesh-eating abominations, and lots of tension. Resident Evil 4 veers into action-game territory, with an expanded offensive move list, campy humor, and some excellent third-person shooting. Resident Evil 0, while not as well-liked as the others, gives you two players to use simultaneously, and serves as a precursor to the horrors in the original.

  • Total War: Three Kingdoms

    Platforms: PC
    Release Date: May 23
    MSRP: $59.99

The famed turn-based strategy series takes a step into the Orient this time around. The game is set in China's Three Kingdoms period, and players take control of one of a dozen factions and lead them to war in an effort to unify China. You command cavalry and infantry units in battle against an opposing faction, and must either defeat the generals on the field or capture the city's central point to win the match.

  • Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland

    Platforms: PS4, Xbox One
    Release Date: May 25, 2019
    MSRP: $59.99

Atelier is a surprisingly long-running RPG series that generally focuses on a down-on-their-luck alchemist struggling to make a name for themselves in a world of swords and sorcery. Lulua, like its predecessors, combines resource gathering, item crafting, turn-based combat, and novel visual elements.
