LinkedIn Starts Using AI to Write Better User Profiles, Job Descriptions

LinkedIn is jumping on the AI bandwagon in a bid to help users improve their profiles and recruiters to write better job descriptions without doing any extra work.

Tomer Cohen, chief product officer at LinkedIn, announced(Opens in a new window) (via TechCrunch(Opens in a new window)) that two of OpenAI's GPT language models, which are used for ChatGPT, have been integrated into the business-focused social network.

For LinkedIn profiles, a new GPT-4-powered tool will be offered to Premium subscribers that creates suggestions for what to write in the About and Headline sections.

The suggested text will be formulated using "the most important skills and experiences" listed on your profile, but manages to maintain your "unique voice and style." Any text produced can, of course, be edited before it goes live.

For recruiters, LinkedIn is providing an GPT-3.5-powered job description tool. It requires basic information including job title, company name, workplace type, job type, and location, and then generates a job description(Opens in a new window).

It's possible to enhance the created description by selecting someone in your LinkedIn network that has similar skills to those required for the job. The AI will take this new information into account when generating its next suggestion for the description.

According to Hari Srinivasan, vice president of product at LinkedIn, the job description tool will be rolled out globally before the end of 2023, but for now it's being tested in English among a limited number of job posters in the US, India, UK, Canada, and Australia.

Finally, LinkedIn is offering 100 AI courses for free(Opens in a new window) through June 15 this year, available in English, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. They are split across several categories including generative AI, machine learning, responsible AI, advanced AI, and applied AI. A further 20+ generative AI courses are also planned over the next few months.

Meanwhile, LinkedIn's parent company Microsoft has just announced Microsoft 365 Copilot, which designed to take the drudgery out of work by automating various tasks for you, such as writing emails, creating presentations or extracting insights from a spreadsheet. How long will it be before all parts of a LinkedIn profile can be generated for us?
