Egypt launches roll-out of Curriculum globALE

A shortage of professional adult educators hinders progress in lifelong learning across the globe. To advance the professionalization of adult educators and hence improve the standard of adult learning and education programmes at national level, Egypt began the roll-out of Curriculum globALE, a reference framework for the training of adult educators, with the support of the UNESCO Cairo office, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and DVV International.

On 7 and 9 December 2022, a workshop organized by the three parties brought together key government and civil society representatives, including the Ministry of Social Solidarity, the national Authority for Adult Education, teacher training associations as well as universities, research institutions and professional associations from Egypt. Participants discussed the collaborative development of a roadmap for contextualizing and implementing Curriculum globALE in Egypt.

Dr Mohamed Yehia Nasef, President of the Adult Education Authority in Egypt explained: ‘Curriculum globALE is a vital instrument to be implemented in Egypt for the training of teaching staff working in adult education. For a successful implementation, this instrument needs to be contextualized and enriched with Egyptian knowledge and cultural practices.’ The contextualization phase will be continued in January 2023.

Curriculum globALE presents a common core competency framework for the training of adult educators, developed by DVV International, UIL, the German Institute for Adult Education (DIE) and the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE). In use for many years around the globe, it is the first comprehensive framework of competencies and practical tools for policy and practice in the professionalization of ALE. It builds on existing experiences, satisfies international scientific standards and is suitable for use on a transnational and global scale.
