77 new pedagogical materials on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and natural resources management have been co-developed, designed and will be integrated in the new Malagasy school curricula for grades T1, T4 and T7. The activity of the UNESCO project, “Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Natural Resource Management for Integrated Community Development in National Parks of Madagascar (BIOCOM)”, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), started in April this year when 52 teachers and educators at the Ministry of National Education (MEN) identified the values of ESD and themes that would be integrated into the new school curricula. Consequently, a validation workshop was held on 8-12 August 2022 to finalize pedagogical resources and tools development on ESD and natural resources management.

Led by RATSIMISETRA Felamboahangy, the Secretary General of the MEN, 46 participants from the Departments of Pedagogical Inputs, Curricula and Educational Research, and Pedagogical Training at the Ministry as well as the National Institute of Pedagogical Training validated 77 pedagogical materials. Six primary and secondary teachers joined the workshop to ensure the applicability of the materials in the classroom. It is expected that the materials would be incorporated in the curriculum in 2023.

The BIOCOM project aims at conserving the Outstanding Universal Values of the World Natural Heritage property of the Rainforests of the Atsinanana (Parc National de Marojejy and Parc National d’Andohahela) as well as to safeguard Montagne des Français protected area and support activities that will lift the property from the World Heritage in Danger
