Amazon.com Inc. showed off its first electric powered delivery van built by startup Rivian Automotive LLC today.
The vehicle boasts some cool technology, including an advanced driver-assist system, voice controls powered by Alexa and various sensors.
“When we set out to create our first customized electric delivery vehicle with Rivian, we knew that it needed to far surpass any other delivery vehicle,” Ross Rachey, Amazon’s global fleet and products director, said in a blog post. “We wanted drivers to love using it and customers to feel excited when they saw it driving through their neighborhood and pulling up to their home. We combined Rivian’s technology with our delivery logistics knowledge, and the result is what you see here — the future of last mile delivery.”
Amazon hasn’t said anything about the van’s battery, drivetrain or other specifications. Instead, its blog post focused on the higher-level technology. For example, the van will be fitted with numerous exterior cameras linked to a digital display in the driver’s cabin, providing a 360-degree view outside. It’s also integrated with Amazon Alexa so drivers can find the fastest route to their destination using their voice and as for weather updates.
Amazon also said the driver-side door has been strengthened to provide extra protection, and there will be three levels of shelves in the rear of the van with a bulkhead door for faster access. Interestingly, there will also be a “dance floor” in the driver’s cabin “for easy movement inside the van.”
Amazon first said it was planning to build a custom electric delivery vehicle last year, when it announced its “The Climate Pledge” commitment to be net zero carbon by 2040.
It’s no surprise that Amazon chose Rivian, which was founded in 2009, to build its electric delivery vehicles, since it was the lead investor of a $700 million funding round in the startup in February 2019. In September 2019, Rivian landed another, $1.3 billion round, followed by its most recent, $2.5 billion round in July of this year. Amazon was named as a lead investor in both subsequent rounds.
Rivian has debuted two electric vehicles prior to the Amazon delivery van, including its R1T pickup and its R1S SUV. The startup said when they were announced in 2018 that they’ll be priced at around $70,000 and will be able to travel up to 400 miles on a single charge, reach 60 miles per hour in under three seconds, and also have self-driving capabilities. The SUV is expected to be on the road by August 2021.
Amazon said it hopes to have 10,000 Rivian vans on the road making deliveries by “early 2022” and that it ultimately aims to have a total fleet of 100,000 vehicles by 2030.;
