Matt Palmer, executive director for the Lower Thames Crossing project – one of the most ambitious road building projects undertaken in the UK in the last 35 years – explains why an initial application for a Development Consent Order has been withdrawn, and gives some background on the project, which will create a new way to cross the River Thames, easing congestion on the M25 London-orbital motorway, east of the capital.
