Heavy rain, isolated severe storms possible Sunday

12 Dec 2020, 10:38 am

A quick moving low pressure system brings heavy rain and the chance for isolated severe storms for parts of southeast Texas on Sunday. This is the same low pressure responsible for heavy snow accumulations for parts of Oklahoma, the Texas panhandle and Kansas.

There is a narrow window during the early to mid afternoon Sunday when a few severe storms will be possible as the cold front moves through. Temperatures will be in the 70s across Texas and Louisiana. The warm temperatures plus Gulf of Mexico moisture will lead to a small window of time where isolated gusty thunderstorms are possible.

Isolated severe storms are possible from Houston through Lafayette. The biggest threat will be storms with gusty straight line winds in excess of 60 mph. However, a brief weak spin-up tornado will be possible along the coastline and I-10 corridor if there is enough wind turning with height in individual storms.

Rain and thunderstorms will begin in the early afternoon hours across southeast Texas as a warm front lifts north through parts of Mississippi. Heavy rain will be ongoing across Arkansas, northern Louisiana and south Mississippi.

By 4 pm, energy is maximized across southeast Texas as the low pressure system and cold front conitnue to push to the east. Heavy rain and isolated severe storms are possible including thunderstorms with gusty winds and the chance for a spin up tornado. Heavy rain will be ongoing across Arkansas and north Mississippi.

By 7 pm the system has merged into a line of strong gusty thunderstorms in central Louisiana. Heavy rain continues across Mississippi.

The system starts to lose energy as it moves to the east throughout the evening. An area of heavy showers with occasional gusty winds is possible for parts of the I-55 corridor in Louisiana and Mississippi, but severe storms are not expected.

This system will continue to race to the east overnight, bringing heavy rain to the southeast before pushing into the Atlantic Ocean Monday. Rain totals could be as much as 2-3″ where heavy rain sets up especially across Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. Isolated flash flooding will be possible in prone spots.
