Android is the most widely used operating system in the world, and its Google Play app marketplace recently turned a decade old.

To commemorate Google Play's 10-year anniversary, app analytics firm App Annie published a report breaking down trend data from app store's inception to today. (Much of the data concerns the period from 2012 to 2018, after it was rebranded from Android Marketplace to Google Play.)

App Annie found that, all told, Google Play has racked up nearly 330 billion downloads from January 2012 to August 2018 and has accrued $85 billion in consumer spending over that period. More than five thousand apps generated more than a million dollars apiece. Over 2.8 million apps were available in the Google Play store as of August, but nearly 10 million apps in total have been released since 2008.

Since 2012, Google Play has seen its revenue soar compared with app downloads, doubling from 2015 to 2017 and going up to $27 billion this year. Most of that growth is in games, which accounted for 41 percent of downloads but 88 percent of consumer spending in 2017.

Google Play generates double the app downloads of the iOS App Store. It also accounts for two-thirds of worldwide consumer spending on mobile app marketplaces compared to a third for Apple.

As far as the most popular Google Play apps and games of all time, there aren't too many surprises: Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Snapchat are all in the top 10.

The most popular Android games by worldwide downloads include some of the big viral sensations of the smartphone era. Candy Crush Saga, Temple Run 2, Fruit Ninja, and Clash of Clans are all on the list. But the all-time most downloaded Google Play game is Subway Surfers.
