Facebook has bought messaging app WhatsApp in a deal worth a total of $19bn (£11.4bn) in cash and shares.
The app, which has 450 million users, is another way to send instant messages at no cost, but Facebook already has its own means of doing that.
Mike Butcher, from techcrunch.com, explained why he believed Facebook was making the purchase.
