Open Education Week shines light on implementing UNESCO OER Recommendation best practices

OER training saves lives in Brazil during COVID-19 pandemic

Dr Carlos Alberto de Oliveira, Deputy Director of the Multidisciplinary Institute of Human Development with Technologies (IFHT) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in Brazil shared his experience in qualifying as a health worker through the use of OERs. The University provides online training opportunities to 2.5 million students through a multilingual (Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili) OER platform. Health workers in Tanzania were able to benefit from training materials that were adapted to the national context.

Madagascar’s OER adoption paves the way for inclusive learning for all

The incorporation of OERs into Madagascar's education system demonstrates the importance of ensuring accessibility and inclusion, as well as making these resources available offline and training education professionals in their use.  As part of the Covid response project, an E-learning platform targeting primary school teachers has been developed to host the OERs. The country’s expert said that “In Madagascar, a survey carried out among 1991 teachers revealed that 70% agreed that OER used on tablets was helpful and 77% of them have used OER in the classroom. Additionally, making these resources available in offline and broadcast modes has enabled students with limited access to the internet to learn and thrive”.

University of Nantes’ OPeN Action Programme breaks down barriers with OER

University of Nantes’ OPeN Action Programme consists of awareness raising, training, producing resource and communicating with the goal of creating an open sharing framework to improve educational access and effectiveness. As a result, it has helped to create a massive pool of 5000 openly shared educational resources. The project aims to support the co-design principle of OERs, develop more learner-friendly pedagogical approaches and increase knowledge sharing outside the university.

Switzerland’s 20-year culture of open education and OER model

A federal project called Swiss Digital Skills Academy, led by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) shapes the Swiss experience. The project promotes digital skills training through OER and open platforms, as well as communities of practice.

Background: OER Dynamic Coalition and Open Education Week

Following the adoption of the UNESCO OER Recommendation by Member States at the 40th Session of the UNESCO General Conference in November 2019, the OER Dynamic Coalition was formed. The Dynamic Coalition’s goal is to assists governments in implementing the OER Recommendation by promoting and strengthening international and regional cooperation among all stakeholders in the first four areas of the UNESCO OER Recommendation.

Open Education Week began in 2012 as a collaborative, community-built open forum by Open Education Global. Every year, OE Week raises awareness and celebrates innovative open education successes around the world.
