Machine Learning from Scratch (机器学习概论)

Introduction: This course is based on Danny Friedman’ book, namely Machine Learning from Scratch-Derivations in Concept and Code. It covers the building blocks of the most common methods in machine learning. It will provide a conceptual overview of machine learning with the theory behind its methods, and focuses on the bare bones of machine learning algorithms. Its main purpose is to provide students with the ability to construct these algorithms independently. There are 7 parts, including ordinary linear regression, linear regression extensions, discriminative classification, generative classification, decision trees, tree ensemble methods and neural networks. These contents are designed for readers looking to learn new machine learning algorithms or understand algorithms at a deeper level.

IKCEST Silk Road Training Base Held the 130th IKCEST Training Programme for Silk Road Engineering Science and Technology Development (IKCEST丝绸之路培训基地举办第130期IKCEST丝绸之路工程科技发展培训项目)

Introduction: The 130th IKCEST Training Programme for Silk Road Engineering Science and Technology Development was held from Dec.15th to Dec.31st, 2022. It was co-hosted by the International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology (IKCEST) under the Auspices of UNESCO and Xi’an Jiaotong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and was organized by IKCEST Silk Road Training Base. 163 trainees from 42 countries such as Indonesia, Iran, India, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Cambodia participated in this training programme. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this training programme was held online.

The 4th IKCEST “Belt and Road” International Big Data Competition Concluded in Beijing (第四届 IKCEST“一带一路”国际大数据竞赛在北京闭幕)

Introduction: The 4th International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Science and Technology under the auspices of UNESCO (IKCEST) “Belt and Road” International Big Data Competition 2022 and the 8th Baidu & Xi’an Jiaotong University Big Data Competition concluded on January 10, 2023. CAE Member WU Manqing, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chairman of IKCEST Governing Board pointed out that it was particularly important to strengthen the cultivation of innovative talents, enhance their strength, and establish an internationally competitive talent-cultivation system in the field of big data. The team "Nanshan North" from Pengcheng Laboratory and the team "Babelfish" from Harbin University of Technology won the international first prize.

Introduction: According to the China Earthquake Networks: local time on February 6, 2023 at 4:17 (Beijing time 2023 February 06 09:17), a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Turkey, the focal depth of 20 kilometers, the epicenter is located at 37.15 degrees north latitude, 36.95 degrees east longitude. On February 7, 2023 local time, Maxar Technologies released satellite images of parts of Turkey that were shaken before and after the earthquake (February 6, 2023, February 7, 2023).

IKCEST-DRR Releases Data Sharing for 2023 Earthquake Disaster Reduction in Turkey and Syria (国际工程科技知识中心防灾减灾知识服务分平台上线土耳其和叙利亚地震灾害应急数据共享服务)

Introduction: A 7.8 magnitude earthquake and a 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred consecutively in the early morning of Feb. 6, local time, in the border area of southern Turkey near Syria. In response to the earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria, the Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service of the International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology under the Auspices of UNESCO (IKCEST) quickly collected and compiled disaster data and released the Disaster Emergency Data Sharing Service (http://drr.ikcest.org).

Estimating Forest Desiccation to Better Predict Fire Danger (评估森林干燥程度以更好地预测火灾危险)

Introduction: Desiccation of tree foliage is a key factor in the spread of fires. However, during droughts, changes in the water content of forest canopies remain poorly understood. Scientists from INRAE and the CNRS have developed the first model to predict content during drought and heat waves. Their results, published in the journal New Phytologist, could enable the development of fire danger forecasting models that include the role of vegetation in their calculations.
