Introduction: The mission of this unit is to carry out collaborative research activities between RIKEN and Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. The activities include not only managing and expanding interactive joint research programs, but also scientific/technical cooperation, researchers/student intra-exchanges, etc. The research subjects related to neutron beam technology and advanced photonics technology are currently promoted. By extending these activities to the other research fields in RIKEN and XJTU, the team contributes to promote internationalization of RIKEN.

Introduction: The IKCEST Training Programme for Silk Road Engineering Science and Technology Development & University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR) Virtual Summer Courses 2022 was held from June 27th to August, 2022. It was co-hosted by the International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology (IKCEST) under the Auspices of UNESCO, University Alliance of the Silk Road (UASR) and Xi’an Jiaotong University, and was organized by IKCEST Silk Road Training Base. Until now, a total of 1,039 students from universities of UASR, including universities in China, Russia, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey and other countries, registered for the workshop.

Introduction: A flood and drought monitoring and forecasting system over China using satellite and modeling data has been developed. The system has been implemented at the National Disaster Reduction Center of China, and made the drought and flood risk reduction information available for the Emergency Management Department of China. The system has been applied in the Lancang-Mekong River basin and could improve the availability, access, and use of disaster risk reduction information in the context of transboundary risk management.

Introduction: GAYAN, Afghanistan (AP)—A powerful earthquake struck a rugged, mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan early Wednesday, flattening stone and mud-brick homes and killing at least 1,000 people. The disaster posed a new test for Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers and relief agencies already struggling with the country’s multiple humanitarian crises. The quake was Afghanistan’s deadliest in two decades, and officials said the toll could rise. An estimated 1,500 others were reported injured, the state-run news agency said.
