        The Fourth International Workshop for Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service was held online on December 1st, 2020. This workshop was hosted by International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology under the Auspices of UNESCO (IKCEST) and Section on Earth Sciences and Geo-Hazards Risk Reduction, Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences, UNESCO, organized by Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSNRR, CAS) and Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service of IKCEST (DRRKS), and supported by Alliance of International Science Organizations on Disaster Risk Reduction (ANSO-DRR), International Cartographic Association, Commission on Cartography in Early Warning and Crises Management (ICA CEW&CM), School of Civil and Architectural Engineering of Shandong University of Technology, School of Environment Science and Spatial Informatics of China University of Mining and Technology and Geography Resources and Ecology Knowledge Service System of China Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology.

       Soichiro Yasukawa, programme specialist and coordinator for disaster risk reduction and resilience, UNESCO Section on Earth Sciences and Geo-hazards Risk Reduction, Mr. Philippe Pypaert, programme specialist for natural sciences, UNESCO Office in Beijing, Ms. Chang Liu, director of Division of International Cooperation, IKCEST, Mr. Yan Zhuang, director of International Organization Department, Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS, Prof. Xing Gao, deputy director of IGSNRR, CAS, Prof. Gretchen Kalonji, former assistant director-general of UNESCO and the dean of Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction, Sichuan University-Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. Qunli Han, executive director of the International Project Office of Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR), Prof. Jiping Liu, Chairman of International Cartographic Association, Commission on Cartography in Early Warning and Crises Management (ICA CEW&CM) and Deputy Dean of Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping, and prof. Oyunsanaa Byambasuren, director of the Fire Management Resource Center-Central Asia Region (FMRC-CAR) , National University of Mongolia,  participated in the workshop. More than 70 experts and scholars from China, the United States, Japan, Germany, Russia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Spain, and the DRRKS team attended the workshop. This workshop was simultaneously broadcast online worldwide, attracting more than 1300 audiences.

      In the opening session, Prof. Juanle Wang, executive director of DRRKS, moderated the ceremony. Ms. Chang Liu gave opening remarks and made a report on “Current Practices of IKCEST”. Mr. Yan Zhuang on behalf of the International Organization Department, Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS and prof. Xing Gao on behalf of IGSNRR, CAS, made remarks respectively.

During the keynote speech session, Prof. Gretchen Kalonji made a report on “Interdisciplinary Disaster Sciences and Health Emergency Management: Perspective through the Lens of Development of Innovative Curricular Programs”. Prof. Qunli Han delivered the speech of “Development of DRR Research Agenda for 2030 and beyond - Notes from IRDR IPO”. Prof. Jiping Liu showed a report entitled “Multi-Source Information Integration Service for Comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction”.

      This workshop has three thematic sessions as follows: “Disaster Monitoring and Risk Management Application”, “Disaster Risk Reduction Regional Scenarios and New Methods” and “Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service and Disaster Information Science”. In this workshop, the experts gave reports and exchanged views on disaster information management, disaster monitoring, disaster mapping, disaster risk assessment, the application of artificial intelligence in disaster risk reduction, COVID-19 impact factors, etc.

DRRKS team will fully absorb and summarize the achievements of this workshop, strengthen and sustain the cooperation with international and domestic institutions, and further improve the service capacity and influence of DRRKS (http://drr.ikcest.org).
